No previous experience is needed to join this course.
Introduction to Moving Water
This session is spent at a site specific location at a venue convenient to you. The aims of the session will be to build confidence in your own abilities by working on the basics of paddling on moving water.
Some flat water experience would be an advantage.
River Trips
This will be a great day to remember. It’s a day spent on a local river convenient to you, grades I – III. During the session we can cover boat handling, safety and rescue skills, or just go for a paddle! All this and you’ll spend your time in some of the best river locations in Britain.
Pre-course experience: you should be a capable paddler on flat water at about 2* standard.
3* Open Boat Award Training & Assessments
This training is spent developing your boat handling skills to the standard of your needs. By the end of the session you will know just where you are compared to the BCU 3* syllabus and you will take away with you an action plan for your own paddling development.
1* to 3* Award Assessments
The BCU star awards are an excellent way to gauge your personal performance progression in paddlesport. 2* is also essential if you are thinking of progressing onto the BCU coaching scheme.
1* (Generic) – The 1* award is a clear stepping stone to becoming a paddler.
2* (Canoe & Kayak) – This is an improvement award that helps you to develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact.
3* Canoe Assessment
Successful performance at this level indicates that a candidate can consider themselves as an intermediate canoe paddler rather than a beginner.
